Field Day 2021 is just around the corner

Each year on the fourth full weekend in June, the American Radio Relay League (ARRL) holds a special operating event known as Field Day where more than 35,000 radio amateurs in the US and Canada meet to operate from remote locations.

Field Day provides an opportunity to observe amateur radio in action, practice radio techniques, and enjoy good food and fellowship.

This year the McHenry County Wireless Association will hold its Field Day event at the Rush Creek Conservation Area in Harvard, IL.  The site is located off of McGuire Road, just east of Route 14. For reference, the Walmart is located on the corner of McGuire Road and Route 14.

McHenry County Century Bike Run

The inaugural McHenry County Century Bike Run will be held on May 30th from 6:30 AM to around 3 PM.

MCWA was contacted to ask if any amateur radio operators would be able to assist in event communications.  Wendell Smith (N9REP) has been in touch with the coordinators and is looking for volunteers to assist in the event.

Wendell says that it is a lot of fun and a great opportunity for the newer hams to get involved in public service. It is also a way to showcase amateur radio’s capabilities.

Please contact Wendell for more information and to sign up to help.

MCWA April 7th, 2020 Meeting Cancelled

The McHenry County Wireless Association Board of Directors has taken the action to cancel our April 7th MCWA meeting due to concerns with the COVID-19 situation that is unfolding.  The Board members feel that this action is in the best interest and safety of our members and guests.  It is a very disappointing turn of events since we had a fantastic presentation lined up for the meeting.  The good news is that Sevim Ablay WB8BHN has agreed to reschedule his presentation on European SOTA & Friedrichshafen for another meeting later this year.

We understand that meeting with other members and comradery are important to our group so we are encouraging MCWA members to consider keeping in touch with each other by joining one or more of the local nets that our members have set up:

     Sixers on the EN52net:
Meets every Wednesday at 7:15pm on with early Check-ins at 7pm on 50.180 USB horizontal.

     10 Meter Net:
Meets every Friday evening at 9pm on 28.415 MHz USB
Early check-ins taken from 8:45-9pm.  Join us for Ham trivia after we find out what our net
participants are doing or projects they are working on.

144/222 MHz:  2FORnet, aka 220/2 meter USB net
Meets on the second Tuesday of each Month
          220 net: 7:00pm on the KO9H Cary repeater:  224.960 MHz (-), PL 110.9
2 meter USB net: Starts at 7:30 PM on 144.180 USB, horizontally polarized.

Between now and our May 5th meeting date, the MCWA BOD will continue to monitor the COVID-19 status and provide another update to our members as we get closer to our May meeting.  With luck, the virus will have run its course by then.

If you have any questions, please contact me or one of our Board members.

Thanks & 73
